Detailed Product Description
GR20 Guitar Synthesizer with GK3
Guitar Synth, or Compact Pedal? With the GR-20 it feels like both. Simply attach the included GK-3 Divided Pickup to your guitar and you can be playing high-quality Roland sounds in seconds. Selecting a sound is like choosing an effect. First, select a sound category using the Bank knob. Categories include Strings/Orchestral, Wind, Brass, Bass/Guitar, Organ/Keyboard, Piano, Synth/Lead, Voice/Pad, Ethnic, and Rhythm/Percussion. Now you can select individual sounds using the Number/Value dial. It's easy! Roland's Finest Sounds with Exceptional Tracking At the heart of the GR-20 is an advanced sound engine based on Roland's professional synthesizers. Sounds can be played with up to 48-voice polyphony for full, rich-sounding Patches. And the sounds are equally impressive. From expressive string ensembles to spiritual tabla loops coupled with sitar-all with adjustable attack and release-there's no limit to what you can do. Sophisticated DSP makes the GR-20's pitch detection ultra-reliable, so you can strum with confidence. Take Your Guitar Playing Further Want to create a sound that's all your own? Try blending the natural sound of your guitar pickups with the GR-20. Thankfully, the GK-3 Divided Pickup makes this easy via a larger and smoother GK knob. Imagine playing chords and then slowly fading in a swirling, breathy pad to create intensity. Or how about playing a distorted lead on your guitar with a thick synth lead sound? Now take this a step further with the GR-20's Patch Link function. This allows you to easily assign GR-20 Patches to match effect Patches in MIDI-capable processors like the BOSS GT-6. It's the ultimate system for serious guitarists. Includes the New GK-3 Divided Pickup When you buy a GR-20, you also get a GK-3 Divided Pickup and GK cable in the box. In other words, everything you need to start playing synth sounds is included! The GK-3 is 30 percent thinner than its predecessor, and it now uses a 1/4-inch jack for normal guitar input. The pickup includes an adjustable curve design to keep an even distance between the strings for better response (the pickup cable length is also adjustable). Owners of Les Paul-type guitars can install the GK-3 safely without drilling using a special attachment plate included in the box.

The GR-20 synth is an amazing piece of gear. I seriously doubt if I will ever use all the features available. The guitar sounds suffer greatly, but the rest of the sounds more than make up for it. These sounds are so realistic they will fool your ears and the ears of your audience. The piano, organ, violin, sax, synth, and pads are astounding. I don't know how they do it, and I don't care. I will not worry about being bored playing guitar, and I will not play/jam the same song twice. I use this with a PRS and a Line6 Delay. Tracking can be a problem, but the learning curve is steep. The time spent learning the nuances of these instrument sounds will greatly enhance the sound coming out of the speakers. You must imagine the way a real player would use each instrument. It has its limitations (these are not real instruments) but with time comes authenticity.

All you need from a guitar synth, I mainly use it twinned with a Boss g-8.
This setup will give you all the sounds you require especially when you pair the synth and guitar together.
Setup simple takes an hour or so
Tracking no problems (only problems if you do not play cleanly)
Great value for money I have had hours of fun with this and it has added another dimension to my playing .

I got this with the pickup at a local guitar store. Don't get me wrong, the synth sounds really good. There is one massive problem that ruins the whole package- the tracking of the unit. I'm not sure if it's the pickup, or the processor, but the tracking is horrible. It works fine when playing at slow tempos, but try to strum a chord, or play a simple rhythm on one fret, or even scales at anything past 100BPM and it cuts out. Notes don't come through at all. Here is an example, I was playing straight 16th notes at about 120 BPM. One out of EVERY FOUR notes could be heard. I cannot describe how disappointed I am. If it worked like it should have, It would have been an excellent value. Sadly, It doesn't even come close.

Guitar synths are expensive, tricky to use, even trickier to set up and have totally unrealistic sounds that aren't practical or usable - right?
NO!
The GR-20 is relatively cheap for what it is. It is simple to use, simple to set up and works really well in both a live stage setting and in recording.
The sounds are very, very usable. There are a good variety of instruments that sound highly realistic and can be played without any actual fiddling around or programming (although getting into the manual and spending some time setting it up yourself brings even greater reward).
Never had a tracking problem and never had to worry that it sounds fake but I will say that the biggest let down was the guitar sounds!
Nylon string guitar - awful.
Distorted guitar sounds - terrible.
But hey that's not what you bought a synth for is it?
Piano, Strings, Hammond Organ, Accordion, Sax, Trumpet, Banjo, Steel Drums: used them all on stage with great effect.
Always thought synths were like I described them in the first paragraph? Always used similar comments and thoughts as reasons why you never bought a synth? Get this one - you really have got no excuses.
